COLLAGES-ASSEMBLAGESEXHIBITIONS
COLLECTION An exceptional collection of roughly two thousand, particularly twentieth century, collages and assemblages lies at the heart of the private collection. A specific area was equipped to permanently exhibit parts of this collection. The collection, which was developed round the art of mainly Belgian artists, encompasses collages from the early 1920’s (Avant-Garde and Dada era) by Paul Joostens, Georges herbiet, Henri Van Straten, Michel Seuphor, Marcel-Louis Baugniet and Jean-Jacques Gailliard. Futher collages by surrealists as E.L.T. Mesens, Marcel Mariën, Gilbert Senecaut, Louis Scutenaire, Jane Graverol, Rachel Baes, Robert Willems and Roger Van De Wouwer are part of the collection. Many of these collages have before been lent out for exhibitions to the Museum of Bukarest (Belgian Surrealism), the ‘Centre Georges Pompidou’ in Paris (Dada), the new Musée des Beaux-Arts in Mons (Surréalisme en Belgique 1920-2000) and to the Musée du Louvre (Jan Fabre, L’Ange de la Métamorphose). Uit de bloeiperiode van de collagekunst van de jaren ’50 tot ’70 is een groot aantal kunstenaars in de verzameling aanwezig: Camiel van Breedam, Georges Collignon, Engelbert Van Anderlecht, Robert Geenens, Max Servais, Annie Debie, Louis Van Lint, Christian Dotremont, de beweging Coll’Art opgericht door Marcel-Louis Baugniet en Jean Milo... Uit diezelfde periode dateert ook een aantal werken van schrijvers, dichters en kunstcritici. Onder hen Louis Paul Boon, Hugo Claus, Freddy De Vree, Paul De Vree en Patrick Conrad. A large number of artists from the hey-days of collage art (1950’s through 1970’s) has been assimilated into the collection: Camiel van Breedam, Georges Collignon, Engelbert Van Anderlecht, Robert Geenens, Max Servais, Annie Debie, Louis Van Lint, Christian Dotremont, the Coll’Art movement (founded by Marcel-Louis Baugniet and Jean Milo)… A series of works of authors, poets and art critics date back to the same era. The collection includes creations by Louis-Paul boon, Hugo Claus, Freddy De Vree, Paul De Vree and Patrick Conrad. The collection encloses some “Collages Partagés” as well, joint collages created by two artists: Paule Pia and Annie Debie, Christian Dotremont and Mogens Balle, Jo Delahaut and Jean Dypréau, Serge Vandercam and Joseph Noiret… Constructivist artists are also represented in the collection: Jo Delahaut, Jean Rets en Jean-Pierre Maury. With the addition of works by contemporary Belgian artists like Jan Fabre, Panamarenko and Luc Tuymans the collection offers a unique overview of twentieth century collage art (un siècle de collage). Young artists who experiment with the medium of collage furthermore are eagerly kept an eye on. The intention is to reserve parts of the collage room for solo exhibitions by contemporary collage artists. Works by Sofie Muller were on display during the first individual exhibition. The second solo exhibition was devoted to Thierry Renard, one of Belgian’s few artists with an oeuvre built up for the bigger part of collages. Daarnaast worden jonge kunstenaars die experimenteren met het medium collage op de voet gevolgd. Het is de bedoeling om in de ruimte van de vaste collectie telkens een solotentoonstelling te brengen van een hedendaagse collagekunstenaar. De eerste individuele expositie toonde werk van Sofie Muller. Thierry Renard - één van de weinige Belgische kunstenaars wiens werk bijna uitsluitend uit collages bestaat – verzorgde de tweede solotentoonstelling. In het kader van de nieuwe wintertentoonstelling G58-G59 MASS-AKKER staat de collagezaal volledig in het teken van de tentoonstelling G59. Zo is er werk te zien van onder andere Paul Joostens, E.L.T. Mesens, Robert Geenens, Line Ducerf, Georges Mariën, Wout Hoeboer, Max Bucaille, Paul Snoeck, Gust Gils en anderen. De presentation of the artworks in the collage museum is supported by De Kringwinkel Antwerpen.
